I removed the sustain and reverb from the snare drum because I wanted my beat to sound smaller in comparison to the bassline. The bass drum plays along to the start of every note in the bassline and the snare drum plays between those notes. The Drumkit – The drum kit follows the exact same pattern as “Kryptic’s” version of “Star Shopping”, and my first reproduction of the song. Compression and EQ – This is used to make my bassline louder after losing some of its volume due to the various instrument plug-ins.Distortion effect – I used this to turn down the tone and make my bassline softer. This gives my track more musical motion and causes it to be more relaxing. Flanger effect – This effect makes my bassline feel like it’s floating up and down in volume. This causes the instrument’s range to be wider and more atmospheric. Tremolo effect – To make the audio move from one side of a stereo speaker to the other. I have applied numerous effects to the sub bass to make it more unique than any other bassline I’ve produced: The bassline works excellently well with the melody by bringing detail to the lower notes of the riff. The Bassline – The bassline is a lower pitch version of the main melody played on a bass synth called “808 Sub Bass”. After this, I EQ’d and compressed the melodies to put more emphasis on the harmonic pitches, compared to the harsh pitches which cause disturbing distortion. The subordinate countermelody is a few pitches higher so it stands out, but also subtly compliments the track’s main melody.įor both melodies, I added a reverb effect which alters the fidelity of the instrument, giving it a more “Lo-fi” quality. They’re played in harmony with one another to make a continuous arpeggio that plays throughout the entire song.Ī, G♭, E, D, and D♭ are the notes that make up the track’s countermelody which begins to play near the end of the song. The main melody is a riff composed of notes from the G major pentatonic scale: G, E, B, D, A, and F. The Melodies – The main melody and countermelody for the song are played using the same instrument used on the track “October” (Chill Keys) (Screenshots showing the track’s structure) An individual synthesizer plays near the very end of the track but fades away to signal the completion of my project. The outro is an extra detail I added to make this song a conclusion to my EP. This is the only way I could get external audio files onto my project’s timeline.Įverything but the outro is identical to the original structure of the song. The BPM was still a bit off so I had to increase the tempo by 1 to get to 93BPM.Īfter the finding the right tempo I recorded the pre-isolated vocals off of Youtube by using “Garage Band’s” inbuilt microphone. I counted 23 beats so my BPM would be 23 x 4 which = 92BPM. During those 15 seconds, I have to count every beat, then multiply that number by 4 to find the BPM. To set the right BPM, I used the same method as the one I displayed on “.exe”. I had to set a timer for 15 seconds then listen to “Star Shopping” until the timer stops. The Structure and Vocals – The first thing I had to do was separately set the BPM then record the pre-isolated vocals.
